American Idol season 10 kicked off Wednesday evening with new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, who left some viewers disappointed for they didn’t shake the show up as promised, and remaining original judge of the show ever since, Randy Jackson.
No one of the three-person panel pulled off the Simon Cowell card. Even Tyler could somehow water down the most biting insults, for instance, when he asked a burping contestant in a gruff voice, “Did you eat paint chips as a child?” and then added, “We have a higher standard here.”
The Aerosmith frontman appeared playful during the show, squealing along with the contestants, while J.Lo sat firmly in her seat. As the show proceeded, however, she seemed to loosen up.
Tyler mostly noticed on the contestants’ tunes while Lopez commented on their looks. When a 15-year-old from Philadelphia with a generic voice, which failed to catch Tyler and Jackson’s attention, came in, named Kenzie Palmer, J.Lo said, “You guys are crazy – she’s beautiful, she’s only 15 and she’s giving us some energy.”
Jersey Shore native Tiffany Rios; Britney Spears’ fan Ashley Sullivan; 16-year-old Victoria Huggins, and a Japanese Michael Jackson impersonator named Yoji “Pop” Asano, were among the contestants who made a mark during the auditions. 51 hopefuls were eventually chosen to go on to Hollywood.
