Amy Winehouse Is Dead: What Can Be Learned From The Tragedy?

Posted by Tyler Mills in Music

Amy Winehouse is dead. She passed away and will now be known as one of those celebrities who died young. I think her death once again offers us an opportunity to evaluate what being a celebrity means in our society. Amy Winehouse stepped out into the limelight. She became famous because of her musical skills and the mess that many people felt her life was. We have to ask ourselves whether celebrities such as Kurt Cobain, Heath Ledger and Amy Winehouse really could handle everything that came with their fame.

Ultimately, I would venture to say that celebrities such as Amy Winehouse likely wanted the economic security that fame can bring you, but it is hard to see them wanting all of the privacy violations that can come with that fame. Amy Winehouse was a talented singer and a capable performer, but was she trained and truly prepared for all of the pressure that can come with being a worldwide star?
Her parents tried to help her by asking her to go to a rehabilitation clinic and she lampooned that episode into a song. What does this say about our society?

Her parents did not seem to know where to turn and it had to be quite embarrassing for them to admit that their daughter was struggling with a crack cocaine addiction. James Dean starred in a film called “Rebel without a Cause.”

The truth of the matter is that this attitude is still popular within the general public.

It was not just drug use that caused many of Amy Winehouse’s problems, she reportedly also suffered also depression and eating disorders. The biggest positive that can come from the death of Amy Winehouse is the fact that young people who are currently struggling with substance abuse may come to their senses and seek treatment.

We will enjoy Amy Winehouse’s music for years and in in this sense she did not die in vain.
