The next Peter Parker
Columbia Pictures finally revealed who would inherit the Spiderman suit from Tobey Maguire.
In a press release issued Thursday, the studio announced that 27-year-old Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker for the fourth Spider-Man flick. “The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt.”
“Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents,” director Webb claimed in a statement included in the same press release. “He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”
Garfield, born in Los Angeles, has won a number of British theater awards and received the BAFTA for TV’s Boy A. In 2007, Variety named him one of its “10 Actors to Watch.”
He was seen last year in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and he will appear later this year, opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, in the film adaptation of the novel Never Let Me Go, and in David Fincher’s Facebook pic, The Social Network.
Other stars who have been eyed as the next Peter Parker included young stars like Josh Hutcherson (Bridge to Terabithia and The Kids Are all Right), Jamie Bell, Frank Dillane (Tom Riddle from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Aaron Johnson of Kick-Ass.
The film is slated to be released July 3, 2012, in 3-D.
