DeWyze: The Wise Choice

America's new idol, Lee DeWyze.

It was a fateful Wednesday night for the former paint-store clerk from Illinois Lee DeWyze as he trounced tight rival Crystal Bowersox from Ohio with a 2 percent vote differential, emerging victorious as season 9’s American Idol.

As the champion was showered with sparks and confetti, host Ryan Seacrest asked him how it felt like to be the new American Idol. “I don’t know! This is amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything. Thank you. Thank you,” DeWyze blurted out and burst into tears as he faced the cheering crowd in the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.

“I’ve never been happier in my life,” he added before belting out his coronation song, U2’s “Beautiful Day,” which will also be his first single as the Idol champion.

Although Bowersox was the consistent favorite throughout the competition, she seemed to have faltered as the show came to a close whilst the panel of judges—Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, Ellen DeGeneres and Randy Jackson—expressed their support for DeWyze.

Lee DeWyze has kept the three-season streak of male winners alive, at the same time proving that sometimes it’s the slow and steady that wins the race. Even as Bowersox nearly got ahead of him prior to the finale, the efforts of the raspy-voiced 24-year-old have definitely paid off.
