Serbia’s Novak Djokovic trounced Great Britain’s Andy Murray 6- 4, 6-2, 6-3, and achieved his second Australian Open title on Sunday in Rod Laver Arena.
Djokovic, the No. 3 seed, lost only one set in seven matches and did not get defeated in any versus the defending champion Roger Federer during the semifinals or versus Murray in the final.
“There’s been a tough period for our people in Serbia, but we are trying every single day to present our country in the best possible way, so this is for my country Serbia,” Djokovic said after the match while holding the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup.
On the other hand, 23-year-old Murray seemed to find it hard to win sets in Grand Slam finals. The British tennis player has now played in three such finals without extending his opponents. Both of his losses came from Federer, the first happened in the 2008 U.S. Open while the second took place in the 2010 Australian Open.
Djokovic and Murray has been facing each other across the net since their European junior event days. The former’s triumph on Sunday clearly catapulted him to the third-best player rank of the golden era in men’s tennis.
“He had an unbelievable tournament and deserved to win,” said Murray, ranking fifth, in his postmatch remarks.
