Do Movies Criticizing Wall Street Make Money?

Posted by Tyler Mills in Television

Wall Street 2 was a film that was expected to have more success. Michael Dpiglas was certainly hoping that the film would have more success, he certainly has a great family to take care of. There is a lot of populist anger out there that the creators of Wall Street 2 wanted to capitalize on. The populist anger that was created by groups like Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party have a common theme to them and it tends to be a distrust of the wealthy and the powerful. There are many powerful people out there who simply do not like films like Wall Street 2 because they seem to potentially point people towards the concept of vilification of the wealthy, successful and powerful.

Oliver Stone is someone who consistently has had an underlying political message in many of his films and this is not going to change. Wall Street was meant to pander to people who think there is too much influence peddling in the halls of power, many people are now writing articles on whether or not there are too many millionaires in Congress. Wall Street 2 was definitely not a film that gave people a lot of hope if you believe that wealthy people made their money in a very honest way.

A book like Richistan may have done more to humanize some people who are extremely wealthy and successful. A successful venture capitalist who would be most likely in Oliver Stone’s films and other ventures is likely to face criticism from a director like Oliver Stone. Wall Street Money Never Sleeps was able to pull in one hundred and thirty five million dollars, the money is probably not as high as some people would have liked. Some people may have thought that the plot of the film was simply too predictable.
