The action continues here at Flushing Meadows at Day 8 of the US Open 2010 and one of the most pivotal if not the most pivotal match for the womens side is about to unfold. Number 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki Vs Maria Sharapova will be the one to look for today. Maria Sharapova has been slowly improving since her shoulder surgery and will definitely have her limits tested against the young and hungry Dane, Caroline Wozniacki. Wozniacki has been on a tear here at the US Open and is looking for her first win against a big name and Sharapova is definitely a big name. Sharapova has also been on a roll since dropping her first set here and is set to give Wozniacki her big test.

Roger Federer Vs Jurgen Melzer is the one to watch out for in the men’s side of the court as the Swiss superstar will look to put away another obstacle in his way to winning another US Open Grand Slam title. He has been unchallenged so far beating all his oppenents in straights sets. He has been the long reigning champion here up until he was upset by Juan Marti del Potro. Federer is looking like he is heading for a collision course with Rafael Nadal who has not made the finals here at Flushing Meadows in his career.

The suprise upstart from Cincinnati Mardy Fish has done well here at the Big Apple and will face his toughest test so far against the Serbian Nova Djokovic. Fish Vs Djokovick is one to look out for as either player has the potential to make it deep here at the US Open.

Robert Schimmel of “The Howard Stern Show” dies at 60

U.S. comedian Robert Schimmel died Friday night in a Phoenix hospital upon sustaining injuries in a car accident, his public relations firm said on Saturday.

60-year-old Schimmel was a passenger in his 19-year-old daughter’s car on August 26 when she lost control after swerving to avoid another accident on a Phoenix highway. The daughter was hospitalized, but is expected to recover. Schimmel’s 11-year-old son was also a passenger in the car and was uninjured, media reports show.

Schimmel had a heart attack in 1998 and two years later he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, from which he recovered. He later wrote a book about his treatment called “Cancer on $5 a Day.” He lost his son Derek to leukemia at age 11.

The comedian was best known for his radio work on “The Howard Stern Show” and had appeared on several HBO programs, including his own special, “Unprotected.”

Kanye West writes a song for Taylor Swift to perform

Hip-hop star Kanye West said he’s written a song for Taylor Swift that he hopes she will perform.

“If she won’t take it then I will perform it for her,” he said.

West let out his emotions on his official Twitter account Saturday, acknowledging once again that he was wrong for jumping on stage, grabbing the microphone from Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards and saying her trophy should have gone to Beyonce Knowles.

“How deep is the scar … I bled hard … cancelled tour with the number one pop star in the world … closed the doors of my clothing office,” he tweeted.

At the time he upstaged Swift, the darling of pop and country music, he went to Jay Leno’s show to apologize and said he still had not recovered from his mother’s death two years prior. He said he would be taking a break from the public eye. He canceled a tour with Lady Gaga, apparently due to low ticket sales.

On Twitter, West talked about the backlash: ”I’m the guy who at one point could perform the Justin Timberlake on stage and everyone would be sooo happy that I was there,” he tweeted.

West said he’s now “ready to get out of my own way. The ego is overdone.”

The multiplatinum, Grammy-winning superstar has been an active Twitter user since he signed up earlier this summer and has gained over 900,000 followers.

US Open Tennis 2010 Day 6 – Federer’s Quest

There was a bit of scare here at Flushing Meadows yesterday as Hurricane Earl barreled down on the east coast and put a temporary halt to some of the matches. Lucky for the US Open, Earl was diverted from its path and just grazed the coast. Now its time to get to business and to the matches in round 3. Federer will be getting back to action here and ready to reclaim the US Open title that he won back in 2008.

Roger has had a barrage of criticism laid on him the last couple of years from critics who believe that his game is on the decline. There are some signs that he is not as dominant as he used to be and that could be attributed to a bunch of reasons. Federer is ever the gentleman and would only let his game answer for him.

“At times I took it as a compliment really, too. I mean, I was No. 2 in the world most of the time and playing winning one or two Slams a year and I was on the downslide,” Federer said. “You can’t win every season 12 tournaments. That’s clear for me well enough. I spoiled myself by playing so well, and you just prepare for the times when it’s just maybe not 12 tournaments a season, you know. If it’s two or four or six, it’s still a good season depending on how you’re feeling, how you’re practicing, how you’re evolving as a player. I was always making sure I tried to get better.”

Roger Federer will continue his quest for his sixth major here in Flushing Meadow against Paul-Henri Mathieu of France today.

Parada pleads not guilty to Paris Hilton home burglary

A man who allegedly broke into the house of socialite Paris Hilton armed with knives pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted burglary, officials said on Friday.

31-year-old Nathan Lee Parada of Redlands, California, could face up to six years in prison if convicted. The authorities claim they do not know if Parada specifically targeted Hilton’s home or if the burglary was random.

Parada is due back in court on September 15.

Hilton woke up in the early morning hours of Tuesday August 24, to someone banging on her windows. She called police, and they arrested Parada.

Hilton is a member of the family that founded the Hilton chain of hotels, and she has frequently appeared in films and on television.

Kat Von D and Jesse James, officially together

Kat Von D and Jesse James are now officially an item.

“Yes we’re together – duh!” the tattooed “LA Ink” star, otherwise known as Katherine Von Drachenberg, told E! News at the opening of her Wonderland gallery in West Hollywood Thursday.

Kat Von D and Jesse James were spotted at the event together and allegedly had no problems showing their affection for each other when posing for the cameras on the red carpet.

Drachenberg told People magazine that “Jesse is only my ninth boyfriend. I don’t hang out with anybody unless I am in love.”

James, who finalized his divorce with Sandra Bullock in June after admitting to being unfaithful, confirmed to reporters at the event he was “happy”, although not as direct as Drachenberg. And when he was asked what he liked about Von Drachenberg, James simply replied, “Everything.”

The two were seen back in August getting affectionate at a Las Vegas restaurant and were later spotted together in Austin.

Kara DioGuardi exits American Idol, following Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres

After Ellen DeGeneres and Simon Cowell’s exit from American Idol, Kara DioGuardi goes out of the show next, leaving original judge Randy Jackson.

“I felt like I won the lottery when I joined ‘American Idol’ two years ago, but I feel like now is the best time to leave ‘Idol,’” DioGuardi said in a statement issued by Fox on Friday, calling her experience as a judge on the show “amazing.”

Her statement didn’t spill details as to her reasons for leaving. Her contract reportedly had a one-year option remaining that the network could have exercised.

She offered informed critiques on “Idol,” then again, observers saw her as lacking the pizazz that ex-judge Paula Abdul had once provided.

DioGuardi’s songs have been recorded by Gwen Stefani, Faith Hill, Marc Anthony and others, including past “Idol” winners. Her departure comes as the top-rated show continues auditions for its 10th season, which starts airing in January. Tryouts have been held in six cities, with a seventh announced this week for Los Angeles on Sept. 22.

Cowell started the exodus from “American Idol” earlier this year, for the launching of another Fox talent show, “The X Factor,” based on the hit British program he created. DeGeneres said in July she was leaving after a single season, saying she felt uncomfortable criticizing young talent.

Meanwhile, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are the reported front-runners for the panel.

Rapper T.I. and wife Tameka Cottle busted on drug charges

Five months after the hip-hop star finished his prison stint on weapons charges, Grammy-winning rapper T.I. was arrested along with his wife Tameka Cottle on suspicion of possession of methamphetamines.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, 29-year-old T.I. and his wife were arrested Wednesday night in West Hollywood after deputies smelled marijuana and pulled the couple over. They were released from jail at about 4 a.m. Thursday after posting $10,000 (U.S.) bail each.

T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, served seven months in an Arkansas federal prison and three months in a Georgia halfway house on federal weapons charges for possessing unregistered weapons. He was sentenced to serve three years of supervised release after his prison sentence ended in March and was ordered not to illegally possess a controlled substance. He was also known as the “King of the South”.

Since his release, the Atlanta-based rapper, who previously spent time behind bars for drug offences, has vowed to live a better life, but apparently went on to live otherwise.

Venice film festival kicks off with Natalie Portman in Black Swan

The annual Venice film festival opened on Wednesday at the Lido waterfront with “Black Swan”, a dark psychological drama starring Natalie Portman.

Portman plays a ballerina who finally lands the lead role but loses her grip on reality as the pressure builds. The arrival of a rival dancer, played by Mila Kunis, triggers both obsessive jealousy and sexual liberation in a plot echoing that of the ballet around which it revolves.

Portman, her co-stars and the Venice jury led by director Quentin Tarantino walked the red carpet at the official world premiere, mingling with hundreds of fans and signing autographs for them as well.

“I just want to say ‘amore cinema’,” Tarantino said in the opening ceremony.

A steamy love scene between the actresses and elements of violence and horror make “Black Swan” different from clean-cut on-screen roles often associated with Portman.

“(Director) Darren (Aronofsky) talked to me about this (sex) scene in our first meeting eight years ago,” Portman said after a press screening.

“He described it as: ‘You’re going to have a sex scene with yourself,’ and I thought that was very interesting because this movie is in so many ways an exploration of an artist’s ego and that narcissistic sort of attraction to yourself and also repulsion with yourself.”

Michael Douglas, optimistic as he undergoes chemotherapy for throat cancer

“It’s a stage four, which is intense, and they gotta go at it,” Michael Douglas told talk show host David Letterman Tuesday night. The Hollywood star has recently admitted that he has serious throat cancer but says he remains optimistic as he undergoes treatment.

He told Letterman, “I am head and neck, I am above the neck, so nothing’s gone down and the expectations are good. You like to be down at stage one but the big thing you worry about is it spreading.”

65-year-old Douglas, who is married to British actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, disclosed that he had been diagnosed with throat cancer when he returned to the United States from a family holiday three weeks ago. He had not mentioned the seriousness of the disease in his earlier interview with People magazine.

Douglas said he had been suffering from throat problems for several months. “I went through a litany of doctors and tests and they didn’t find anything and then I had a great summer after some other personal adversities,” he told Letterman. “I came back and a guy said ‘Let me have a look’. All happened within three weeks. They got a biopsy and analyzed it.” He’s now undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.

“The percentages are very good. I would hate to say, but right now, it looks like it should be 80 percent, and with certain hospitals and everything, it does improve.”

Douglas, son of screen legend Kirk Douglas, has two young children with Zeta-Jones.
