Friends with Benefits – Unconventional Relationships in Comedy
Posted by M. Weekley II in Movies
This year will see Hollywood emphasis on unconventional romances rather than monogamous relationships, if the current trend is anything to go by – and we’re half way through the year. Friends with Benefits falls under this category, and if you are thinking that this is becoming cliché, you are right. The theme is indeed doing its rounds, but the movie comes with its own creativity that makes it stand out from you every-day Hollywood romantic comedy.
This buddies-who-boink comedy features Jamie (Mila Kunis), an executive headhunter who decides to get frisky with Dylan (Justin Timberlake), the new hire. Director Will Gluck has tried to make the movie believable by imbuing the characters with a sense of history. Unlike most other movies, where the characters think that they are the first two individuals to find themselves in such a situation, the characters of Friends with Benefits have grown up around romantic comedies.
Will Gluck states that the only reason that Easy A agreed to do the movie was the fact that it would be real; real meaning that it is R-rated. Timberlake even goes further to state that as a viewer, he wouldn’t want to walk into a movie called ‘Friend with Benefits’ and see the PG-13 version. A red-band trailer for Friends with Benefits was released in November of last year. However, the theatrical preview, released in March is MPAA-approved and family friendly. The trailer cuts out the R-rated material and instead includes a considerable amount of not-yet-seen footage. The soundtrack for the movie will be released on July 19.
If you enjoy romantic comedies, then you sure will love Friends with Benefits. If you have been looking for a movie that will resonate with the current trends and still get you laughing, you should get your ticket now. The release date is set for July 22nd, so you only have a few days of anticipation left. It’s a guarantee that you will get entertained with this hip and edgy look at modern-day relationships.
