The new Superman movie distributor announced Sunday that 27-year-old Brit actor Henry Cavill will now play the Man of Steel, almost ten years after he did not make it to the previous film.

Cavill will portray the dual roles of Clark Kent and his powerful alter ego in the flick which will be released by Warner Bros in December 2012.

He used to be a main contender for “Superman Returns” when Joseph “McG” Nichol was attached as director. But in 2004, when McG left the project and Bryan Singer signed on, Brandon Routh was subsequently cast.

Superman Returns, released in 2006, grossed about $391 million at the worldwide box office, a disappointment given its reported $215 million cost. A Warner Bros executive later admitted the film “didn’t quite work … in the way that we wanted it to.”

Cavill is best known for playing the role of Charles Brandon, the brother-in-law of Henry VIII, in Showtime’s royal drama “The Tudors.”

The upcoming Superman flick, which formal title has not been released yet, is written by David S. Goyer based on a story that he developed with producer Christopher Nolan. Zack Snyder will helm the film.

“I also join Warner Bros., Legendary [Pictures] and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry,” Snyder said in a statement. “He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”
